Homelessness has been rapidly increasing in today’s world.This leads to the increase in population of people who earn for their living by begging.People in today’s world encourage such actions on a sympathy basis.But it doesn’t have to be so.Every human has the equal right to live a dignified society.And inorder to achieve this we must ensure that every underprivileged are provided with the basic needs such as food,clothing and shelter.

As the name suggests, this scheme seeks to provide shelter for the urban homeless poor. SUH is a sub-scheme under Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM). The main provisions of this scheme are:

• 1.Ensure availability and access of the urban homeless population to permanent shelters including the basic infrastructure facilities like water supply, sanitation, safety and security;
• 2.Cater to the needs of especially vulnerable segments of the urban homeless like the dependent children, aged, disabled, mentally ill and recovering gravely ill
• 3.Provide access to various entitlements,identity,health care and housing facilities
• 4.Providing an engaged lifestyle such as terrace gardening,cooking,stitching and so on.

Formation of Educational Development Centre for Rural Organization and Training(FEDCROT) is a non-profit non-governmental organization,established to empower the poor and abandoned people.The organization is registered under the Tamilnadu Societies Registration Act,1975 in 1993.Its primary office is currently in Madurai and in initial days,Fedcrot started its activities in the remote rural areas of Madurai and Sivagangai district.The leading organization serves the people without any discrimination to language,color,creed,race,religion and gender.

The organization was founded by Mr.M.Subburam.FEDCROT society is working primarily in the field of health and rural education and its main focus is to develop a better social structure in the most backward rural sections of Madurai and Sivagangai district through the support of state and national governments,pro-development establishments and organizations.The organization works actively in empowering women,providing leadership and skill trainings,helping in the formation of Self Help Groups among women,youth and farmers.The organization was initiated by a group of committed social workers on seeing the injustice done to humanity particularly to female children and women.

The SUHP in Anaiyur is the 9th SUHP in Madurai out of the 14 SUHPs.Initially it accommodated roadside vendors and homeless people and also provided shelter to those people who were affected by natural calamities. This shelter has about 30 residents presently.This shelter which was meant to be a shelter for the urban homeless poor is turning into an old age home where the elderly people are deserted by their own family.

But the residents of this shelter are happier than they were before as the shelter provides all of their needs to live a dignified life. This shelter occupies people who are above 50 years of age without any deadly disease. The SUHP in Anaiyur is also providing food, cooked by themselves for the waiting room facility in Government Rajaji Hospital and it also has the scheme of providing food for the roadside vendors and beggars
